Mail Merging And Bulk Mailing using Google Docs for Email Marketing

In the marketing world, the search for an open source Bulk Emailing tool never ends. I have tried PHPList, MailChimp and many other freewares. For past couple of weeks, I was using Mail Merging with Outlook 2007 for sending bulk emails.

This time, I got another great weapon and that too for no cost. Sending personalized email messages with or without links, is much easier and faster with Mail Merging through Google Docs. I have tried with long list of email addresses I have and surprised with the performance. It hardly take any time in sending 500 mails and that too in recipient’s Inbox, no spamming.

The ONLY thing that you need to have is an Account on Google.

Come with me and give a try to your first Campaign.

1. Logon to your Google Account.

2. Open the Sample Spreadsheet Template.

3. Go to the File option in menu bar and click on Make a Copy.

Give a new name to this spreadsheet, let’s say My Mail Merge.

In your Google Docs, you will see 2 spreadsheets now.

4. In the Forms tab of the menu bar of your spreadsheet, click on Go to Live Form.

Enter some data manually in the form.  Try adding 4-5 values and come back to your sheet again.

5. At the bottom of your My Mail Merge sheet, you will see another page for Email Template.

Open the page to edit the template and customize it according to your requirement. The email template is located at A1 corner of this sheet.

6. From the Tools option in the menu, select Scripts and then open the Script Editor.
Line No 22 of the script displays the default subject of your mail, you can modify it as per your need.

7. From the Select a function to run box in the top, select SendEmails function and then click on the Play button beside that.

The script will ask your authorization for running, click on the Authorize button.

Click on the play button once again.

8. That’s it, You are done !!

Your friends might have started receiving personalized messages from you by now, if they are online, just confirm your success.
