In a recently published report, The Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce announced the estimate of the US retail e-commerce sales for the first quarter of 2014 was $71.2 Billion, an increase of 15% from the first quarter of 2013. Total retail sales saw an increase of just 2.4% in the same period.
According to Internet Retailer’s freshly published 2014 Top 500 Internet Retailer Guide, the US based Ecommerce sites listed in the top 500 are driving 87% of all e-tail sales. These top 500 players are rediscovering and investing heavily in new content marketing initiatives as a cost effective way to educate their customers, engage their audience, and drive sales.
Grow your eCommerce Sales with Content Marketing
Content marketing is a big deal, to the tune of $118 billion dollars. eMarketer forecasted $2.29B will be spent on digital sponsored content in 2014.
While content marketing is a hot topic, it isn’t a new strategy. In fact many digital marketers consider it among the original marketing tactics. A 2014 Benchmarks and Trends report by Content Marketing Institute and MarketingProfs reported that of the surveyed B2C marketers, more than 85% use content marketing, with most admitting they aren’t all that successful in executing their content marketing strategies.
Common hurdles for implementing the content strategy include creating enough content, following current trends, and creating the type of content their target customers are looking for.
- Build a relationship with your customers
- Build credibility
- Create a demand for your products
- Help prospective customers find you
- Educate your audience
Digital marketers are familiar with the many faces and formats of content marketing. A few marketers point to John Deere’s The Furrow magazine published in the 1800s as a resource for farmers. Each content marketing strategy calls for dozens of content types, like
- articles & blog posts
- customer site & product reviews
- images & infographics
- white papers & e-books
- videos produced by customers & brand.
- press release & team interviews
- podcasts & webinars
- buying guides
